One person is facing charges after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) recovered a motorcycle in the Scanlan Road area near the K&P Trail in South Frontenac that was reported stolen from the City of Kingston in 2022.
According to the police, at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024, members from the OPP’s Frontenac County Detachment, East Region Community Street Crime Unit, and Bail Support Team recovered the motorcycle in that area. Having received information that a person wanted on multiple warrants might be in the area, police had attended the dead-end section of Scanlan Road adjacent to the K&P Trail, Constable Robert Martell told Kingstonist.
Officers then searched the surrounding area, where they located a male hiding in a wooded area nearby — the same man they’d been looking for in the first place, according to Martell.
“As a result of the investigation, the male was arrested and held for a bail hearing in the City of Kingston at the Ontario Court of Justice,” the OPP stated.
Police said that Jesse Barnes, age 28, of South Frontenac Township was charged with:
Four counts of failure to comply with a release order — Failure to attend courtUttering threats to damage propertyHarassing communicationsMischief under $5,000Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
“Further investigation revealed that Barnes was wanted by Frontenac OPP, Lennox and Addington County OPP, and Kingston Police Force on outstanding warrants,” police disclosed.
Kingstonist reached out to the Frontenac OPP, the detachment that reported this arrest, to find out what three arrest warrants for Barnes were pertaining to, noting that Barnes has been reportedly arrested in the past, including in January of this year after he fled from a vehicle that had been stopped by police.
According to Const. Martell, the warrant out of the Frontenac Detachment of the OPP was for some of the things he was charged with this morning. That warrant was issued for two counts of bail violation for having failed to attend court, harassing communications, mischief causing damages under $5,000, and uttering threats to commit property damage.
The warrant out of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the OPP was for two counts of bail violation for having failed to attend court, and the warrant out of the Kingston Police Force was a committal warrant, Martell told Kingstonist. A committal warrant allows a judge to enforce a judgment or order against a person who has refused or neglected to comply with a known court ruling or order within a known fixed period of time.
Despite being arrested shortly after 9 a.m. today, Barnes was able to attend a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston, the court session for which began at 10 a.m. It is unclear what the outcome of that bail hearing was.
Kingstonist will continue to monitor this case and provide updated coverage as more information becomes available.
