UPDATED: Man seriously injured in officer-involved shooting
Ontario’s police watchdog reports that a 28-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being shot by Kingston Police officers at the Waaban Crossing on Wednesday.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) stated that Kingston Police got a 911 call from a distressed man around 9:30 a. m. on Aug. 26. Officers were sent to the Waaban Crossing, where they met with the man. [siu. on. ca]
“There was an interaction, and two officers discharged their firearms. The man was struck multiple times,” the SIU mentioned in a news release issued late Wednesday afternoon.
The man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The new information came out just hours after Kingston Police confirmed that a “police-involved shooting” took place on the bridge at about 9:40 a. m., leading to the closure of the crossing in both directions.
Authorities indicated there was no ongoing risk to public safety and that no officers were hurt.
The Waaban Crossing, which is a 1.2-kilometre bridge connecting Kingston’s east and west ends across the Cataraqui River, stayed closed for much of the day while investigators secured and processed the scene.

Earlier Wednesday, Kingston Police spokesperson Const. Anthony Colangeli stated that the entire bridge had been designated as a crime scene to preserve potential evidence.
“To maintain the integrity of that scene, the best thing we can do is close the bridge in both directions,” Colangeli explained.
The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to this case. Investigators retrieved two police firearms from the scene along with one belonging to the injured man, according to their report.
Colangeli noted earlier that Kingston Police could not share more details since responsibility for investigating lies with the SIU now.
“Any further details about those involved or regarding what happened will have to be provided by the SIU, as they are now overseeing this investigation,” he said.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency responsible for looking into incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or when firearms are discharged at someone.
