Environment Canada has put out cold warnings for eastern Ontario as temperatures drop, and the wind chill could make it feel like -35 on Thursday night.

The temperature is expected to stay around -25 C through Friday morning in cities like Ottawa, Kingston, and Pembroke.

Friday night should be a little warmer, but it might fall back down to -25 C in the Ottawa Valley on Saturday night. There’s no wind chill forecast yet for Saturday.

Other than Gatineau, Que., which usually shares alerts with Ottawa, there are no warnings for western Quebec. Maniwaki is expected to get down to about -20 C over the next few nights, with wind chill making it feel around -30.

How to protect yourself

Health Canada suggests dressing in layers with a wind-resistant outer layer, protecting your hands, feet, ears, and nose while staying active to promote blood flow.

It also recommends wearing sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm on sunny days like Saturday to shield your skin from windburn. The agency warns against drinking alcohol since it can give you a false sense of warmth.

Community responses to these frigid conditions vary by municipality or county. Many places encourage people to warm up in community spaces such as libraries during the day, and some cities like Belleville, Ont., and Cornwall, Ont., have opened specific overnight warming centres.

Kingston has extended its temporary warming centre at the Artillery Park Aquatics Centre on Bagot Street until Monday morning.

Other cities including Ottawa have urged those who would normally sleep outside to head to an emergency or transitional shelter, which has received some criticism.

The City of Ottawa also keeps a map of locations where people can warm up during extreme cold spells. Anyone looking for shelter referrals or trying to get someone else out of the cold can call 311.

If you experience medical emergencies like hypothermia, call 911.
