More items are accepted in blue and black bins, including coffee cups, black plastic containers, plastic bags and wrappers.

Ontario has broadened the list of recyclable materials for residents as part of new changes being implemented across the province. Premier Doug Ford stated that the aim is to capture more items and cut down on waste.

Ford mentioned that the province is committed to boosting recycling efforts and is open to modifying the system if necessary.

Starting January 1, a variety of new items can be recycled in blue and black bins, such as coffee cups, toothpaste tubes, deodorant containers, black plastic packaging, frozen juice cartons and ice cream tubs, along with plastic bags and wrappers. Flexible plastics like chip bags and bread bags are also included now.

According to Ford, recycling facilities have indicated they require more materials being brought in.

Residents should remember to rinse out containers and ensure they’re empty before placing them loose in bins instead of inside plastic bags.

Ford noted that programs will be revised if any issues come up.

Officials advise residents to check local recycling guidelines since collection details might differ by municipality.
