This summer, one of Canada’s most beloved bands will be celebrated in its hometown as The Tragically Hip commemorates the 10th anniversary of their heartfelt final concert after lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

The City of Kingston has announced a three-day event called “Forever Hip,” scheduled for Aug. 20 to 22, to honor the band’s last performance in the city back in 2016.

<p Founded in Kingston in 1984, The Tragically Hip grew to become one of Canada’s leading rock bands, famous for hits like Ahead by a Century, Bobcaygeon, and New Orleans Is Sinking.

The group’s final concert on Aug. 20, 2016, turned into a significant cultural moment that millions across the country tuned into.

Downie passed away on Oct. 17, 2017. He was well-known in Kingston long before his rise to fame, having grown up there with his siblings.

“Forever Hip is our way of saying thank you to a band that means so much to Kingston residents and to Canadians across the country,” Danika Lochhead, director of arts and culture services for the city, said in a release.

The anniversary programming will feature concerts, public art installations, film screenings and a large-scale rebroadcast of the band’s last show.

The festivities kick off on Aug. 20 with a free live concert at Springer Market Square featuring Choir! Choir! Choir! along with several local musicians performing Tragically Hip songs.

<p The next evening will see the city hosting a public screening of Long Time Running, which is the documentary detailing The Tragically Hip’s final cross-country tour following Downie’s diagnosis.

<p The commemorative weekend will conclude on Aug. 22 with a public viewing party for the band’s last concert-an event that over 11.7 million Canadians watched when it aired live back in 2016.

<p The city also mentioned additional events such as music walking tours, local merchandise markets and an art installation downtown inspired by Kingston’s vibrant music scene.
