An apartment complex in the area of Dalton Avenue and Division Street was at the centre of an investigation into drug trafficking that recently resulted in three arrests, according to Kingston Police.
In a press release on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, police said the Street Crime Unit began investigating the trafficking of cocaine and fentanyl at the apartment complex in December 2024. As the investigation unfolded, police obtained a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, which was executed “in the early morning hours” of Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, according to police. The Kingston Police Emergency Response Unit assisted with the warrant execution, the release stated.
Officers conducted a “thorough search of the apartment,” where quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine, and fentanyl were located, along with a Cooey shotgun, Canadian currency, and drug-related paraphernalia, Kingston Police detailed. This resulted in three arrests, though police did not identify the people arrested. Police provided the following information on the three accused individuals and the charges they face:
An 18-year-old male from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) was charged with:
Three counts of possession for the purpose of traffickingPossession of the proceeds of crime
Kingston Police said the 18-year-old was already facing charges of assault with a weapon through the Huronia West Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment.
A 20-year-old male “with no ties to the City of Kingston” was charged with:
Three counts of possession for the purpose of traffickingPossession of the proceeds of crime
Police did not say where the 20-year-old resides.
And a 54-year-old Kingston resident was charged with:
Possession for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl
The Kingstonian was on a court ordered release in relation to four previous charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two previous charges of possession of the proceeds of crime, according to Kingston Police.
“All three individuals were transported to Kingston Police headquarters where they were held pending a bail hearing. The maximum penalty for an individual found guilty of possession of a scheduled I or II substance for the purpose of trafficking is imprisonment for life,” police said in the release, which did not disclose the results of the bail hearings mentioned.
“This drug seizure highlights the ongoing influx of fentanyl and other dangerous substances into the city, along with the serious impact they have on the community. The location of this drug operation within a densely populated high-rise apartment building raised significant concerns for special services members,” Kingston Police continued.
“Kingston Police remain committed to serving and protecting residents and urge the public to report any information regarding drugs or weapons.”
Police said tips can be submitted through the online reporting portal when applicable, and that further inquiries can be directed to Detective Sergeant Shawn Birney at 613-549-4660, Ext. 6323.
