Environment Canada issues heavy snowfall and cold warnings for Kingston and area – Kingston News

Environment Canada is alerting people in eastern Ontario, including the Kingston area, to get ready for heavy snowfall and extreme cold as an Arctic air mass moves in.

Lake-effect snow bands are anticipated to form over the weekend, leading to significant snowfall and lower visibility, especially in areas to the east and northeast of Lake Ontario. The weather agency mentioned that local accumulations could reach between 15 to 30 centimetres in the most intense bands.

Blowing snow is predicted to cause near-zero visibility at times, particularly from Sunday into Sunday night as winds pick up. Forecasters warn that conditions might worsen quickly during the heaviest snow squalls.

Daytime temperatures are likely to stay well below seasonal averages, with highs in the minus teens and wind chill values making it feel much colder. Overnight lows may drop into the low minus 20s in certain regions.

Environment Canada indicated that snowfall is expected to continue into early Monday before slowly diminishing as the system weakens. Additional lake-effect flurries might persist into the start of next week.

Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel during times of heavy snow and poor visibility and should be ready for rapidly changing road conditions.
