A worker has died after falling off Pier 14 into Hamilton Harbour on Monday, say Hamilton police.
The worker, who has not been identified, was removing snow near the end of the dock when “a piece of equipment entered the water,” said police.
Police, fire and paramedics attended the scene and tried to save the worker’s life, police said.
He was taken without vital signs to hospital and pronounced dead, said paramedic commander Dave Thompson.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Skills Development is investigating a “possible workplace fatality,” it said in a statement.
The workplace is Ontario Shipyards Inc., the ministry said.
Ontario Shipyards, which repairs ships, did not respond to a request for comment before publication.
“We strive to exceed industry standards for quality, health and safety,” says its website.
