An enormous gap in a Hamilton park led to the invention of an underground tunnel community and generator powering a homeless encampment, police say.
Officers with the Hamilton Police Service say they made the discover on Tuesday whereas patrolling encampments inside Gage Park.
That’s once they discovered a big gap roughly six ft deep had been dug into the bottom.
However officers quickly discovered a sequence of tunnels that had been dug into the earth with extension cords operating to a buried generator.
Police say the excavation was achieved to run energy to a number of tents and encampments.
“Powering all of this was a generator that had been dug into another hole and covered up for concealment,” police mentioned in a launch.
One other energy hook-up was discovered operating from the generator to a Metropolis of Hamilton mild pole.
Officers and members of the Hamilton Police Encampment Engagement Staff say they discovered a lone male was answerable for the mischief.
The person was arrested after a quick foot chase with officers, police say.
Hamilton police say the male, who has not been recognized, was charged with mischief over $5,000 and varied different offences, together with drug trafficking.
The encampment tents within the space have been “relocated” and the tunnels have been fenced off till the town could make obligatory repairs, police mentioned.
