In a Hamilton police crackdown, 5 new arrests have been made throughout an ongoing investigation to deal with the current spur of shootings within the metropolis.

The investigations are a part of broader work from the Taking pictures Response Workforce (SRT) to curb gun violence as town witnesses an all-time record-breaking 54 shootings.

As a part of their efforts, 328 firearms and 70 restricted weapons have been seized — lots of which have been modified for high-capacity firing, they are saying.

“Sadly, this is a reality we are seeing on the streets,” stated Supt. Marty Schulenberg throughout a information convention Monday.

Among the many current arrests is a 25-year-old Hamilton resident who was charged after allegedly letting a six-year-old youngster play with a gun on Aug. 13, 2023. The firearm went off, leaving the person with a non-life-threatening harm.

He faces a number of charges together with obstructing a peace officer, public mischief and careless use of a firearm. The firearm has not but been recovered.

Whereas Hamilton police stay stated they continue to be steadfast of their strategy to deal with gun violence, “a lack of cooperation” from witnesses has made it “frustrating,” Det. Matthew Dugdale stated.
