Hamilton metropolis council will vote Wednesday if it’s going to ask the Ontario authorities to make use of the not-withstanding clause to deal with encampments in public areas.

About 13 mayors throughout Ontario have signed a letter calling on Premier Doug ford to make use of the clause to deal with encampments in cities.

The movement being introduced ahead Wednesday is being moved ahead by ward 5 councilor Matt Francis as a solution to tackle encampments in parks and public areas.

The encampment protocol put in place in 2023 permits non permanent shelters in teams of not more than 5, and be arrange no less than 100m away from colleges and playgrounds, and 10m away from non-public property.

The town says there are simply over 1,500 individuals experiencing homelessness and about 300 encampments throughout Hamilton.
