Ontario Premier Doug Ford reaffirmed his stance that U. S. President Donald Trump could “kiss my ass” as the two exchanged barbs on Monday, with Trump calling the premier “Flunky Ford” and suggesting he’s the “less charismatic, intelligent” version of his late brother Rob Ford.
The insults are part of the ongoing fallout from the Canada-U. S. trade war, which intensified after weekend negotiations between the two countries fell apart.
As a result, 50 per cent U. S. tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods went into effect early Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that retaliatory tariffs will be applied to U. S. goods starting September 8.
Ford first made his remarks during an interview on Toronto radio station Newstalk 1010, stating that Trump’s tariff threats warranted a response where the president can “kiss my ass.”
The premier repeated this sentiment at a news conference in Hamilton while pledging to defend the “jobs and paycheques” of Ontario workers, alongside Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy.

With U. S. tariffs on various Canadian products now in effect, some Toronto residents expressed their feelings about these measures-many stating they’ll prioritize buying Canadian goods.
Trump targeted Ford in a Truth Social post during the premier’s press conference on Monday afternoon.
He dismissed Ford’s statements as mere “bluster,” labeling both him and Carney as “clowns” and poor leaders.
When a CBC reporter asked for his thoughts on Trump’s post, Ford stated he wouldn’t engage with “a dictator like President Trump.”
“He’s the type of guy in school that would take your lunch money one day, take your toque off your head the next day and then steal your running shoes,” Ford said.
“I’m not going to take any advice from a guy that’s the king of bankruptcies.”
During his news conference, Ford also indicated that “everything is on the table” regarding potential retaliation measures.
Earlier Monday, he mentioned to The Associated Press that cutting off electricity and critical minerals to the U. S. was an option as tensions escalate in this trade conflict. Ontario provides power to around 1.5 million people across Michigan, New York, and Minnesota.

Trump promises new tariffs
Before Trump’s online tirade against Ford, he heightened trade tensions with a post on Truth Social asserting Canada is “ripping off” America and announcing plans to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, parts, and steel to 50 per cent starting January 1, 2027. The current tariff rate for Canadian steel stands at 50 per cent already while car parts and automobiles are subjected to a levy of 25 per cent according to information available on the Canadian government’s website. Ford expressed full support for Carney’s decision to withdraw from negotiations concerning Canada-U. S. trade agreements while other provincial leaders have largely backed this move too. This morning prior to speaking with reporters at Newstalk 1010 in Toronto; he stated: “We need to throw everything in the kitchen sink at them. He’s arrogant. He’s cocky.” WATCH | Ford voices support for Carney’s decision to walk away from trade deal:
