GUELPH – The University of Guelph has shared the news that Dr. Julia Montgomery will be the new dean of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC).

A seasoned academic, researcher, and veterinarian with over twenty years of rich experience, Montgomery is set to start her five-year term on June 15.

“I am deeply humbled and genuinely excited to be joining the Ontario Veterinary College as its next dean,” said Montgomery in a press release. “Being entrusted with the leadership of Canada’s premier veterinary institution by the OVC community and the University of Guelph is a great honour.”

Most recently, Montgomery was a professor and head of veterinary clinical services at Oklahoma State University after completing her postdoctoral fellowship in pulmonary pathobiology. Before that, she spent more than ten years teaching at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

Her research focuses on practical issues in equine medicine like asthma, metabolic syndrome, laminitis, and rehabilitation. She aims to use innovative technologies to promote health for both animals and humans in line with U of G’s One Health Institute.

Montgomery earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, and received her Ph D from the University of Prince Edward Island. She completed a Large Animal Internal Medicine (LAIM) residency before becoming a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine with a specialty in LAIM.

The OVC is recognized worldwide for its contributions to veterinary science, education, and research, consistently ranking among the top veterinary schools globally. The college trains future veterinarians and health leaders while driving discovery and offering expertise aimed at improving animal welfare as well as human health across our planet, according to officials.
