There’s still one more suspect that authorities are searching for after a fourth individual was taken into custody related to the kidnapping and death of a man in Guelph.
Officers from the Wellington County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced in a statement that four suspects have been arrested so far regarding the incident that occurred on May 14. A fifth suspect is still at large.
The situation came to light following a reported crash involving two vehicles on Hanlon Parkway, just north of Stone Road.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a 40-year-old man from Cambridge suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital but sadly later succumbed to his injuries.
Through further investigation, authorities learned that earlier that day, the victim had been kidnapped from a residence on Fife Road by five suspects who then fled in two separate vehicles.
As detectives pieced together what happened, they believe that while heading southbound on Hanlon Parkway, the victim was outside the first vehicle, which was a Toyota Venza SUV, when he got hit by the second vehicle, a Dodge RAM pickup truck trailing behind it.
Since this tragic event unfolded, police have arrested three individuals including a 16-year-old from Guelph, a 19-year-old from Elora, and a 20-year-old also from Guelph.
The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) has now taken Ian Brown, 51 years old and from Guelph, into custody and charged him with assault with a weapon and kidnapping.
“The OPP would like to thank the public for their cooperation and the valuable information that contributed to the apprehension of the wanted individual,” police said. “While this remains an isolated incident, the OPP reminds all members of the public to remain vigilant and contact police if they observe anything suspicious.”
