The New Democrats on the Island have a new leader.

Thomas Burleigh from Bideford, P. E. I., was officially elected during the party’s leadership convention Saturday morning with 46 unanimous votes.

He was the only person running for the role, but party rules require a formal vote for unopposed candidates.

Burleigh serves as the general manager of Burleigh Bros. Seafoods in East Bideford, located near Tyne Valley in western P. E. I. He has also been active in local politics, having served as a councillor in the Rural Municipality of Central Prince.

Burleigh declared his intention to lead last month, just days after Herb Dickieson, former MLA and past leader of the provincial party, dropped out of the race.

Dickieson holds a unique place in history as he is the first and only elected NDP MLA in P. E. I., serving from 1996 to 2000 and leading from 1996 to 2002.

Nominations for this leadership position closed on January 18.

The NDP has been seeking someone to fill its leadership role since late August when Michelle Neill resigned after being in that position since April 2022.
