Liberals will select their subsequent chief — and Canada’s subsequent prime minister — on March 9, the get together stated in a media launch on Thursday night time.

After a frenzy of formal and casual conferences this week following Justin Trudeau’s resolution to step down as prime minister, the Liberal Celebration’s nationwide council selected the date Thursday night time.

The get together can be setting the entry charge for potential candidates at $350,000, sources stated — a big leap from the $75,000 charge set by the get together for the earlier management race.

Candidates must declare their intention to run and pay the entry charge by Jan. 23. Folks can register with the get together to vote within the management race up till Jan. 27.

Modifications to who can vote

The get together is limiting who can vote to Canadian residents and everlasting residents who’re no less than 14 years previous.

Beforehand, non-Canadian residents have been allowed to vote in Liberal Celebration driving nomination and management contests, which have been referred to as a “gateway” for international interference. A rising contingent of Liberal MPs have urged the get together government to heed these warnings.

A variety of cupboard insiders — together with Overseas Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Pure Sources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and Employment Minister Steven MacKinnon — have stated they’re contemplating working for the highest job, however stated they wish to see the foundations first.
