Charles Milliard, who used to be the CEO of Quebec’s federation of chambers of commerce and has a background in pharmacy, is making another attempt for the leadership of the Quebec Liberals.

He shared his announcement in a video posted on social media early Tuesday, expressing his commitment to restoring the Liberal party’s influence in Quebec politics.

“This leadership campaign will be about bringing a stronger Quebec, with a better economy, a transparent government and public services you can actually rely on,” he said in the video.

Milliard finished just behind Pablo Rodriguez in the last leadership race.

Rodriguez resigned last month after facing weeks of internal issues and claims of vote-buying among party members during his leadership bid.

Milliard is the first candidate to officially announce his run for leadership.

A few other potential candidates, like Karl Blackburn, who previously led the Conseil du patronat du Québec, have indicated they won’t pursue the position.

If additional candidates emerge, the race will kick off officially on Jan. 12, with a new leader set to be chosen at a party convention on March 14.

<p. Others are still mulling over their options, including Mario Roy, who also ran previously but garnered less than one percent of the vote.

Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, former CEO of VIA Rail Canada, mentioned earlier this week on Radio-Canada that he’s “still open” to running for leadership.

Candidates must gather 750 signatures from party members and pay a deposit of $30,000.

This leadership contest comes less than a year before the next election scheduled for Oct. 5.

Pablo Rodriguez is out as Quebec Liberal Party leader. Who might take his place?

With less than 10 months remaining until Quebec’s next provincial election, a month-long scandal has resulted in PLQ’s leader stepping down while several well-known figures have confirmed they do not intend to take over.
