The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found that Halton police officers are not responsible for the death of a man in Burlington that occurred in June.
On June 3, Halton police received a call about a situation at a Burlington residence, indicating that a man had possibly killed someone and was threatening a woman. The SIU identified the voices on the call as belonging to a mother and her son.
According to the SIU, when officers arrived, the mother welcomed them inside and directed them upstairs where she indicated her son was located.
The police instructed the man to exit the ensuite bathroom where he was hiding and to drop his knife.

When he “stumbled out” of the bathroom into the adjoining master bedroom, an officer used a taser on him, causing him to fall to the floor.
Officers then arrested him and found he had serious bleeding from a self-inflicted cut on his neck.
They started first-aid until paramedics arrived, who later pronounced him dead.
The SIU – which oversees police conduct – stated that they do not believe Halton police committed any criminal offense regarding this man’s death.
