The provincial police watchdog has announced that it is looking into the deaths of two men at a residence in Burlington, Ont., early Tuesday morning.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) stated in a news release that Halton police responded to a call at 12:30 a. m. at a home on Cornerstone Drive.
When officers arrived, the SIU reported, a 28-year-old man “fled upstairs.”
During a press conference on Tuesday morning, SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette mentioned that initial information indicates “there was a struggle between the male upstairs with police.”
“There would have been a brief interaction and a conducted energy weapon,” she explained.
Denette added that the 28-year-old had suffered “a self-inflicted injury believed to have been caused by a knife.”
Officers called EMS and attempted life-saving measures for the man, according to the SIU. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man, who was in his 50s, was also found dead at the scene, as reported by the SIU. A woman in her 50s was taken to hospital with “non-serious injuries.”
Denette noted that both men were acquainted with each other.
She stated that “there’s no body-worn camera footage,” but investigators are reaching out to interview “a number of witnesses.”
The SIU has designated two subject officials for this investigation and plans to interview five officer witnesses as part of their process.
Denette remarked, “the SIU is mandated to investigate any police involved incident that results in a death, serious injury, et cetera. In this circumstance, there was an attempted arrest made by this individual upstairs and there was an interaction, some conversations and struggle that ensued.”
The SIU informed via email on Tuesday morning that there was no firearm discharge during the Burlington incident and it has been classified as a custody death investigation. Halton police are conducting their own criminal inquiry as well.
Police temporarily closed Cornerstone Drive due to the investigation but have since reopened it.
