A heartbreaking situation occurred early Tuesday morning in Burlington, where a father and son were discovered dead, and the mother was injured at a home.

Halton Regional Police Service officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence located on Cornerstone Drive near Dundas Street and Appleby Line just after 12:30 a. m.

The SIU reported that Halton Regional Police Service officers reached the home and found a 28-year-old man with self-inflicted injuries, believed to be caused by a knife, who had fled upstairs.

Officers attempted life-saving measures and called for paramedics, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A conducted energy weapon was used during an interaction with the responding officers.

“The focus of the SIU investigation is the death of the 28-year-old man,” said SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette. “There has been a knife that has been looked at [by investigators].”

A second man in his 50s was found deceased at the home, according to the SIU. A woman, also thought to be in her 50s, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released.

“These individuals are known to each other,” Denette mentioned.

Authorities stated this is an isolated incident, assuring there is no danger to public safety.

Police had previous encounters at Burlington residence

City News confirmed earlier incidents of violence involving this family of three. One nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous reported hearing yelling and loud screams from the house late Monday into early Tuesday morning.

“At around 12:30 a. m., I heard arguing next door. As I said off-camera, it has been a regular occurrence since I moved back in 2016,” said the neighbor.

“I spoke with the father occasionally. I felt bad for him. I’d see him take drives and walks just to escape from home.”

The neighbor noted he rarely saw much of the son, suggesting that he thought the 28-year-old seemed antisocial and spent most of his time indoors.

“Other than the occasional walk with his mom.”

The Halton Regional Police Service is conducting its own criminal investigation alongside the SIU after Ontario’s police watchdog activated its mandate.

Four investigators along with two forensic specialists have been assigned to look into this case, accompanied by three witness officials.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates situations where individuals have died or sustained serious injuries. They also examine cases involving alleged sexual assault or when firearms have been discharged toward someone.
