A man who was allegedly involved in the shooting death of a woman in Brampton, Ont., on Tuesday and later abducted his one-year-old child has died following a police shooting, according to Niagara police on Wednesday morning.
At around 2:30 a. m., officers found the suspect, 38-year-old Anthony Deschepper, inside a vehicle at a gas station located near Thorold Stone and Montrose roads in Niagara Falls, as stated in a police news release.
The emergency task unit from Niagara police responded, and “following an interaction with officers,” Deschepper was declared dead at the scene. No officers sustained injuries, and authorities are still present at the location.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which oversees cases involving police actions that lead to serious injury or death, has taken over the investigation. Due to this ongoing inquiry, police have stated they cannot share additional details about what led to the officer-involved shooting.
Kristy Denette, spokesperson for SIU, informed reporters Wednesday that Deschepper was shot multiple times by one officer. The reason behind the shooting remains unclear; however, a firearm was recovered at the scene.
Authorities were searching for Deschepper concerning the deadly shooting of a woman in a parking lot at a plaza in Brampton near Queen Street E. and Airport Road shortly before 2 p. m. Tuesday. It’s reported he fled with his child still inside the car.

An Amber Alert was briefly issued by police Tuesday evening but was lifted later when the child was found safe that day. Authorities believe she may have been dropped off with family members but could not confirm those relationships as of Wednesday.
Constable Mandeep Khatra mentioned on Tuesday that it appeared to be an “intimate partner-related incident,” but they were still “trying to figure out what exactly transpired.” The identity or age of the deceased woman has not yet been disclosed by law enforcement.
Investigators noted on Tuesday they believed Deschepper had moved into the Niagara Region. A temporary shelter-in-place order was enacted in Crystal Beach on Tuesday but has since been rescinded.

Constable Richard Hingley stated Wednesday that evidence came into possession late Tuesday indicating Deschepper had left Crystal Beach. He then tracked him down at the gas station where he encountered officers who shot him.
The vehicle found containing Deschepper was identified as a Chevrolet on Wednesday-different from Nissan he allegedly used when fleeing after Tuesday’s incident; Hingley confirmed that Nissan has been recovered as well.
A woman was discovered inside the Chevy alongside Deschepper; she has since been arrested while charges await determination against her connection to him remains unclear at this point.

Five investigators along with two forensic specialists have been assigned specifically for this case according to their news release.
