The International Association of Chiefs of Police has an awards page that details the recognition program. As of this report, the list of recipients for 2026 hasn’t been yet. Therefore, Peel’s announcement serves as the source for this information; a date for the award presentation is still not confirmed.

According to the police announcement, the Anti-Racism Advisory Committee involves residents and community leaders from Brampton and Mississauga in the project. This committee’s role includes guiding recommendations and their implementation. Community feedback and an independent evaluation are essential parts of the accountability process.

A solid agreement supports the project

The Ontario Human Rights Commission provides additional context on the reform framework. Its agreement notes that on August 17, 2026, the commission, police service, and board signed a Binding Arbitration Agreement.

This agreement comes after a project that started in 2020 and recommendations made public in 2023. The commission states that this work involves changes to policies, community engagement, race-based data collection, accountability measures, training programs, and service delivery improvements.

In its announcement from August, the commission mentioned jointly selecting an independent verifier-supported by the advisory committee-to oversee implementation. The agreement also sets up a process for resolving disputes with binding arbitration as a last resort. It’s important to clarify that this framework is not meant to be confused with an independent assessment that has already been completed.

Acknowledgment versus actual results

The police release includes details about training initiatives, policy evaluations, and performance metrics. This report doesn’t include those figures without providing their definitions or comparisons nor does it link changes in policing outcomes directly to this project.
