Over 700 recycling pickup zones 'accidentally omitted' in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon: Mayor Brown

Over 700 pickup areas that were “accidentally omitted” from the province’s new recycling contract will now be included in services for Mississauga, Caledon, and Brampton, according to Mayor Patrick Brown.

Launched this year with the aim of standardizing residential recycling collection across Ontario, the program has led to confusion about which items can be recycled.

There have also been reports of missed pickups and poor communication. The mayor of Brampton stated that more than 700 pickup zones were initially overlooked during the rollout across the province.

Brown mentioned that he had a meeting with the company responsible for handling recycling pickups in Peel for Circular Materials, the non-profit organization assigned to unify curbside recycling throughout Ontario.

“They informed me that, when Circular Materials took over under the province’s new system, 735 pickup zones in Peel were accidentally omitted from the new provincial contract,” Brown said in a social media post this week. He added that the company “now has authority to service them.”

Despite these initial setbacks, Brown expressed his hopefulness that any issues arising from this transition will be sorted out going forward.

Starting next month, changes will occur in the Circular Materials recycling program; only items placed inside blue bins will be collected.

This means blue recycling bags, large cardboard boxes, and other materials left outside of bins won’t be picked up. Circular Materials has indicated that additional recycling bins will soon be available for residents dealing with excess waste.

Some neighborhoods in Peel have reported that blue recycling bags haven’t been picked up during recent collection times.

Before 2026 began, municipalities in Ontario were responsible for collecting recyclables with each having its own rules about what could go into blue bins and boxes.

If anyone is facing issues with their recycling pickup schedule, they can reach out to Circular Materials by calling 1-877-667-2626 or visiting www. circularmaterials. ca.
