New tools designed to clean gear used by firefighters are expected to lower the cancer risks for Brampton’s emergency responders.
The equipment will help remove harmful toxins that can build up on their gear and be inhaled or absorbed by the firefighters.
Over $230,000 will be allocated for these items, which include two self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) washer units and four bunker gear washers.
This funding comes from the Ontario government via a fire protection grant.
The grant also aids municipal fire services across Ontario with initiatives aimed at improving firefighter safety, enhancing emergency response, and modernizing fire service infrastructure.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer compared to the general population due to exposure to toxic chemicals, combustion by-products, and diesel exhaust through skin contact and inhalation.
