A resident of Brampton just became $100,000 richer after a regular ticket check turned into an incredible surprise.
According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), Joel M. from Brampton won $100,000 in the Lotto 6/49 draw on May 13 by matching the last six of seven Encore numbers in order.
OLG now identifies most lottery winners only by their first name and last initial instead of releasing full names publicly.
The 59-year-old mentioned he has been playing OLG lottery games for around 20 years and often adds Encore to his Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max tickets.
While at home, Joel decided to scan a few tickets using the OLG app.
The first ticket gave him a free play, while the second one netted him a small $2 prize. Then came the third ticket.
“As I scanned the last one, the screen lit up with the words ‘Big Winner!’” Joel recalled while picking up his prize at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.
He said he momentarily froze as he looked at the screen and counted all those zeros.
“I was at a loss for words,” he shared. “Tears of joy started welling up as I took in the win.”
Even with all that excitement, Joel kept it to himself for several days since he was busy celebrating his parents’ 60th wedding anniversary.
Only after those celebrations wrapped up did he tell his wife about winning.
“While we were having breakfast, I laid the validation slip on the table and told her I’d won $100,000,” he said.
Joel noted that his wife was initially stunned before she grasped what had happened. His kids were just as surprised and kept asking if it was really true.
The lucky winner from Brampton already has plans for how to use his winnings. He wants to buy a new vehicle, share some with family members, invest for future needs, and go on vacation.
“It feels amazing to be an OLG lottery winner,” Joel said. “I still can’t believe it.”
The winning ticket was bought at Hasty Market located on James Potter Road in Brampton.
Encore is offered as an add-on for most lottery games for an extra dollar and features multiple prize levels through twice-daily draws.
