Authorities have confirmed that five individuals lost their lives in a house fire in Brampton, with more remains found in the burned-out home over the weekend, Peel Regional Police reported on Monday morning.

Const. Tyler Bell mentioned that the victims include three women, a toddler, and an infant.

Initially, two bodies were discovered in the residence during a search last Thursday – a grandmother in her 50s and a 27-year-old woman.

The other victims – a 29-year-old mother and her two-year-old son – were located during additional searches conducted over the following three days.

Four more people are currently hospitalized but are stable.

One of those hospitalized is a pregnant woman who underwent surgery for a caesarian section. Unfortunately, her baby did not survive, making it the fifth casualty from this tragic fire, as confirmed by Bell at the scene on Banas Way near Mc Laughlin and Remembrance roads.

“Sadly, one of the patients at hospital was pregnant, she underwent surgery, delivered that baby and that baby has since passed,” he said.

A third individual who was previously thought to be missing after the fire is now safe. He is identified as the husband of the pregnant woman whose baby died and also the father of a five-year-old boy who was injured in the incident.

Initially feared to be unaccounted for, police have clarified that he was out of town for work during the time of the fire.

Bell noted there was “a delay in verifying his whereabouts” which initially led to him being classified as missing inside the destroyed home.

Emegency services responded to calls about the fire at Banas Way just before 2:45 a. m. on November 20. Footage shared with City News showed flames consuming most of the semi-detached house upon firefighters’ arrival.

A total of 11 people were connected to this residence.

Bell previously stated that many involved were part of an extended family living together at this location.

Of those still receiving treatment at hospitals, Bell indicated their conditions are stable and noted that the five-year-old boy is “doing well.”

The investigation into what caused this deadly blaze will take time; however, so far there’s “nothing to indicate criminality,” according to Bell.

Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg mentioned that while smoke alarms were found within the house, it’s unclear whether they were operational. This will form part of ongoing investigations.

The house has been completely demolished by crews following these events.

Mayor Brown Addresses Housing Issues

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown recently labeled the homeowner as an “absentee landlord” who neglected city-required inspections and lacked proper licensing for multiple tenants living under one roof during an update last week.

“In recent years, this absentee landlord (who) is often out of country submitted plans to create another dwelling unit in the basement,” he explained on Thursday.

Brown stated that while work had been ordered by City officials for completion, allegations arose that required inspections were not followed through by the owner.

This situation led to an order demanding compliance from property management,” Brown added. “The city followed established procedures and took extra steps to ensure required work was addressed.”

“I would note this is not licensed to have multiple tenants,” he continued. “All those details will come out as investigations proceed.”

Speaking generally about such matters regarding landlords ignoring local laws is something Brown finds “infuriating.”

“We’ve seen units where up to 25 individuals reside,” he stated firmly. “I’ve expressed my concerns about wanting no calls from firefighters regarding another tragedy.”

“I hope we don’t encounter another tragedy like this again.”
