Authorities seized thousands of chocolate bars, sunglasses, perfume, and various other items during a routine traffic stop in an Eastern Ontario town.

Police in Cobourg, situated 95 kilometres east of Toronto, suspect that the individuals arrested are linked to an organized crime group focused on retail theft.

Three suspects have been taken into custody: two adults and one minor, all hailing from Brampton. Investigators are currently searching for one additional suspect.

The incident took place on January 4, just before 11 p. m., when officers noticed a driver not wearing his seatbelt correctly.

Upon investigation, the officers discovered that the driver had a suspended license. As preparations were made to impound the vehicle, several stolen goods were uncovered.

“As a result of the police investigation, officers formed reasonable grounds that all parties in the vehicle were involved in organized retail theft,” said police. “The driver was also issued two summonses for driving while suspended and improperly wearing a seatbelt. A search warrant was executed on the motor vehicle, and several items believed to be the result of thefts across multiple jurisdictions were seized.”

The recovered items include:

The total value of the stolen goods recovered is estimated at around $16,183.

The three individuals have been charged with possession of property obtained by crime.

The two adult males are being held for a bail hearing while the youth has been released on conditions with a future court date set.

A fourth suspect remains at large and charges are pending further investigation, according to police.

The names of those charged have not yet been disclosed by law enforcement.
