A late-night call to the police about a suspected break-in in Barrie, Ont., ended with a masked culprit making a quick getaway.

At around 12:35 a. m. on Thursday, the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of strange noises at a home near Sunnidale Road and Oakridge Drive.

Barrie Police spokesperson Peter Leon told that the homeowner heard sounds coming from his garage several times and thought someone might be trying to break in.

Four officers arrived quickly to check it out and found the garage door open; a masked figure darted away from the scene. But it turned out not to be a person.

The officers confirmed that the intruder was actually a raccoon that had gotten into the garage.

“Needless to say, the bandit, who was four-legged, ran from the garage and we haven’t had any reports of him since,” said Leon.

The police reported finding the furry troublemaker digging through a compost container stored inside and munching on apples.

No further sightings were noted in the area after that.

Barrie police are reminding everyone to make sure all doors are locked before heading off to bed. “Don’t ever forget to lock the door from your house into the garage as well… at the end of the day, it’s about keeping everyone safe,” added Leon.
