February 17, 2026 With increasing energy needs and global challenges, Ontario is taking swift action to enhance its electricity network by speeding up the Barrie to Sudbury Transmission Line project. This new 290-kilometre, 500-kilovolt line will provide dependable power for Simcoe County and northern Ontario, generate over 9,000 jobs, and promote sustainable economic growth in the area. By resolving a significant issue between northern and southern Ontario, this project will offer more reliable electricity and bolster the resilience of the entire system. Ontario is also promoting economic reconciliation by developing this initiative alongside First Nations, involving Indigenous leaders and allowing up to 50 percent ownership through Hydro One’s Equity Partnership Model. Under Premier Ford’s guidance, Ontario is looking ahead – implementing vital infrastructure that maintains affordability, enhances energy security, and benefits workers and communities for years to come.
