Hydro One selected to implement a 500 k V transmission project in collaboration with First Nations to enhance grid reliability.

The initiative will feature a new single-circuit 500-k V transmission line extending about 300 km from the Hanmer Transformer Station in Sudbury to the Essa Transformer Station close to Barrie. It will also include upgrades to related station facilities and is expected to be operational by 2032.

In addition, Hydro One has been tasked with initiating early development activities for a second single-circuit 500 k V line along the same route. This additional work aims to support future electricity generation in northern Ontario, enhance system reliability and prepare the grid for long-term expansion. The Independent Electricity System Operator will set the recommended in-service date for this second line.

The project will be carried out in partnership with First Nations through Hydro One’s First Nation Equity Partnership Model. Communities near the route will have an opportunity to invest in up to a 50% equity stake in the transmission line component. Hydro One and participating First Nations will collaborate on planning, development and construction.

Hydro One stated that the new line will facilitate connections with new generation sources, unlock extra capacity and strengthen Ontario’s electricity system as demand continues growing. Provincial ministers emphasized how important this project is for supporting mining activities, fostering economic growth, and ensuring long-term energy security across northern Ontario.

First Nations leaders remarked that this project marks a significant step toward creating economic opportunities, promoting self-sufficiency, and enabling meaningful involvement in shaping Ontario’s energy landscape.
