A 4.1 magnitude earthquake has hit southern Ontario, Canada, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). People felt the shaking across various parts of Ontario and even as far south as Rochester, New York.

The earthquake occurred at 10:59 p. m. local time at a shallow depth of around 11.5 kilometers (7 miles), according to the USGS.

The epicenter was found near Brechin, close to Lake Simcoe, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) east of Barrie and roughly 104 kilometers (65 miles) northeast of Toronto.

Residents in the area reported experiencing the tremors. One social media user in Toronto mentioned their “whole house shook for about six to ten seconds.”

Shaking was also reported from Oshawa, Millbrook, and Lindsay in Ontario, along with parts of New York state like Rochester.

While earthquakes are not very common in Ontario, there is some seismic activity now and then, especially near ancient fault lines in eastern and central Canada. Most quakes in this province are minor and rarely cause any damage.
