At least one individual was trapped following a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 11 just north of Barrie.
The incident took place in the southbound lanes near Penetanguishene Road around 10:30 Friday morning.
In a social media update, Oro-Medonte Township Fire Chief Roree Payment reported that the crash involved at least 40 vehicles, with one person trapped and multiple vehicles on fire “impinging” on a gasoline tanker truck.
As many as two dozen drivers were evacuated from their cars.
Snow squall and cold weather warnings have been issued for much of the area.
The Ontario Provincial Police posted on X that injuries sustained are non-life-threatening.
UPDATE (1:25 p. m.): #Hwy11 NB and SB is now closed between Penetanguishene Rd to Line 4, north of #Barrie. Clean-up and repair efforts are underway following a multi-vehicle collision. Minor, non-life-threatening injuries reported. ^pia

Even in areas without snow flurries or squalls, visibility has dropped to zero at times due to blowing and drifting snow, especially in open spaces.
Highway 11 is currently shut down in both directions from Penetanguishene Road to Line 4 in Oro-Medonte for clean-up operations.
