The Metropolis of Barrie is wrapping up a four-day commerce mission in Germany at present (Nov. 8), aimed toward strengthening financial ties and sustaining the long-standing relations with Zweibrücken, Barrie’s sister metropolis.

The delegation included Mayor Alex Nuttall, Deputy Mayor Robert Thomson, IRC chair Coun. Jim Harris, native Barrie companies, Worldwide Relations Committee members and Make investments Barrie employees.

“There are too many folks leaving Barrie to work in Toronto each day and in order to balance the quality of life in our community, we need more jobs here,” mentioned Nuttall. “This week, enterprise leaders, municipal leaders and worldwide relations committee members travelled to Germany in search of new funding from superior producers in Germany.

“Our relationship with German producers are tried and true with the success tales of Hörmann and SBS Drivetec, alongside the native success story of Napoleon. Our hope is to proceed to increase the superior manufacturing sector in Barrie and proceed the work of attracting enterprise to our group that started below the tenure of our first mayor Willard Kinzie.”

This commerce and funding mission aimed to strengthen current relationships with financial companions, establish commerce alternatives and appeal to new investments in key sectors similar to automotive, and superior manufacturing and serves as a follow-up to a delegation from Germany who visited in October 2023.

“This trip is crucial for maintaining partnerships with cities like Zweibrücken and companies like the Burger Group, which operates in both Germany and Barrie,” added Nuttall. “Strengthening these partnerships and exploring new alternatives for native companies drives financial development.

Barrie’s German-owned SBS Drivetec (Burger Group) assisted the delegation by facilitating introductions and organizing firm excursions to maximise invaluable connections and alternatives. With over 100 Baden-Württemberg corporations investing in Ontario and lots of Ontario corporations investing in Germany, the mission will assist foster additional relationships and improve financial collaboration. 

“We are pleased to be supporting the City’s delegation into the Black Forest Region and serve as an ambassador for doing business in Barrie,” mentioned Fabian Burger, Managing Director and CEO of Burger Group.

Mark Schick, CEO of Superior Movement & Controls Ltd. was additionally a part of the delegation. “This year’s Trade Mission is the most informative, relevant and on-point that I have participated in,” mentioned Schick. “City Staff and Council have delivered our message that Barrie is open for growth in the Industrial/Manufacturing Sector. Our company will have many new opportunities should any of the factories we visited decide on Barrie as a prime location to grow their NAFTA/USMCA market share.”

Since 1997, Barrie and Zweibrücken have maintained an in depth sister metropolis relationship, fostering strong exchanges in tradition, sports activities, tourism, and training. In 2021, two-way commerce between Ontario and Germany reached $12.7 billion, with $18.2 billion in German direct funding in Canada and 260 German corporations in Ontario.
Baden-Württemberg, Germany’s third-largest financial system with a GDP of $750 billion, is house to distinguished multinationals like SAP, Daimler, and Porsche, with over 100 Baden-Württemberg corporations having invested in Ontario.
