Three new stores are set to take over a former Hudson’s Bay store in Ontario.
After the closure of 96 Hudson’s Bay locations in May 2025, many units remain empty.
This month, Georgian Mall in Barrie shared that it has found three tenants for the old Hudson’s Bay space within the mall.
The area is currently being updated to accommodate a Longo’s grocery store, a GYMVMT (a Good Life gym concept), and the clothing retailer Mark’s, as announced by the mall.
According to Georgian Mall, these three retailers are anticipated to open their doors in mid to late 2027.
A recent report from Retail Insider highlighted the challenge of finding large retailers for these big spaces and suggested that many units might be repurposed into smaller areas for three to five tenants.
More than a year since the closures, there hasn’t been any department store operator stepping up to fill Hudson’s Bay’s shoes. Retail Insider mentioned that B. C. billionaire Ruby Liu’s plan to transform numerous closed Hudson’s Bay locations across Canada into new department stores was blocked in court.
In the meantime, some places have temporarily hosted pop-up shops like Spirit Halloween.
Georgian Mall is among the first malls announcing renovations for new tenants.
