Bruce County Street 19 has formally been dubbed the “Highway for Peace” in tribute to the a hundred and sixtieth Bruce Battalion that fought within the First World Warfare.
On Friday, November 8, group members joined native historians and officers in Walkerton for the disclosing of the brand new signal, simply in time for Remembrance Day on Monday, November 11.
About 1,200 younger males from throughout Bruce County had been a part of the a hundred and sixtieth Bruce Battalion with the Canadian Expeditionary Drive. On June 3, 1916, the Battalion marched 16 miles from Walkerton to Chesley, on Bruce Street 19, to obtain the Battalion Colors and Banner in a ceremonial presentation by then-Ontario Premier William Hearst. On June 5, 1916, the younger troopers once more marched alongside Bruce Street 19 to return to Walkerton. The Battalion would depart Walkerton on June 12, 1916 for coaching in England after which an eventual arrival on the warfare entrance in Belgium and France.
“Greater than 100 of those younger troopers are named on cenotaphs all through Bruce County and lots of extra returned with lives modified by the burden of warfare,” a press release from Bruce County stated.
Native Southampton historian G. William (Invoice) Streeter made a presentation to Bruce County Council, which prompted the designation of Bruce County Street 19 because the “Highway for Peace.”
Bruce County has put in commemorative signage roughly each eight kilometres in each instructions alongside Bruce Street 19, marking the historic journey of the a hundred and sixtieth Bruce Battalion
“Thank you to our local historians and heritage experts who work with such passion and community-spirit to preserve the significant history and culture of Bruce County,” stated Bruce County Warden Chris Peabody. “With this memorial designation, we honour the sacrifices and contributions of the 1,200 young soldiers of the 160th Bruce Battalion, who helped shape Bruce County into what it is today.”
