Rural Ontario communities are heartbroken after a tragic accident on Friday that resulted in the deaths of five children.

The collision, involving two vehicles at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township, northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo, took the lives of four girls and one boy from the same family. The children were aged four, six, eight, ten, and twelve years old.

Katharina Boese was outside tending to her chickens when she heard the crash near her home; a tire even landed in her yard.

“I looked through, just like underneath [the brush] through the leaves here and I saw that there was a van laying on a field,” she said, adding that the vehicle was lying on its side.

Ontario Provincial Police told on Saturday that the crash involved an SUV with only the driver inside and a family van carrying ten people. Four adults and an infant in the van, along with the SUV driver, suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospital.

Boese described seeing metal parts scattered across the scene; she mentioned that the van’s engine had been thrown from it and was smoking near a river close by.

When the crash happened, Boese said she and her husband rushed over to help alongside other witnesses, where she saw some of the children’s bodies.

“It’s horrible. It’s horrible,” she said, shaking her head.

Boese recalled finding the infant in the back seat of the van and spoke to them until paramedics arrived.

On Sunday, members of the community gathered at the intersection to leave flowers, stuffed animals, and wooden crosses in memory of those lost.

Ontario community in shock after crash kills 5 children

People in Elmira, Ont., are still processing their shock after a two-vehicle accident claimed five young lives from one family while sending six others to hospital.

Community Strength Through Faith, Says Mayor

Police informed that this family hailed from Elmira-an Ontario town located about 40 kilometers south of where the crash occurred between Mapleton and Kitchener-Waterloo.

Sandy Shantz, mayor of Woolwich Township (where Elmira is), expressed her sorrow upon hearing about this tragic event.

She mentioned not knowing who was involved or whether their names had circulated among residents but acknowledged how deeply affected everyone is by such significant loss.

“A tragedy like this makes you mourn for five young lives that won’t get to grow up,” Shantz stated.

“There’s been such a sense of how massive this tragedy is; people are really concerned for both family members as well as friends,” added Shantz while noting many residents’ worries about those affected by these events.

Shantz noted Elmira has around 12 thousand residents; many belong to faith groups such as Mennonites. She remarked how supportive local communities tend to be during difficult times regardless of different beliefs or backgrounds among its members

“I think when something like this happens everyone comes together,” Shantz shared. “Faith can give them strength during hard times.”

Boese indicated she believes those involved might be Mennonite because she heard someone speaking Low German-a common language among Mennonites-and stated she’s familiar with it herself too.

Kara Carter-a pastor at Elmira Mennonite Church-noted hearts feel heavy throughout their community due largely because tragedy has struck so closely here.

“When one person suffers within our circle we all carry part burden,” Carter pointed out while emphasizing importance prayerful support amongst congregants during trying periods.

Carter recounted how her church community came together Sunday morning seeking solace amidst sorrowful emotions present everywhere.

“There’s palpable grief felt – deep sadness surrounds us right now,” she shared further expressing wonderment regarding causes behind tragedies occurring within proximity.
