Canada is known for its strict gun laws, allowing most people to live peacefully. However, that peace was disrupted last summer in various neighborhoods throughout Southern Ontario. A shocking investigation by York Regional Police has revealed that an organized crime ring, aided by Toronto Police officers, was behind this unrest.

Throughout August and September of last year, residents in London, Vaughan, and Brampton were jolted awake by gunfire piercing their usually quiet streets.

A press conference at York Regional Police headquarters on Thursday showcased alarming videos of these gang-style shootings. Officials explained how these targeted attacks-and a plot to murder a corrections officer-are linked to at least seven active members of the Toronto Police Service and one retired officer who allegedly provided critical information to an international criminal network. This situation is being termed one of the gravest instances of police corruption in Canada’s history.

According to sources speaking with The Pointer, there may be officers from other police forces in Southern Ontario, including Peel Police, under scrutiny as part of this ongoing investigation into misconduct.

The investigation dubbed Project South involves a broad web of organized crime along with police involvement facilitating shootings and other illegal activities across Southern Ontario. York Regional Police report that 19 additional suspects have been apprehended during this extensive inquiry.

“This is a deeply disappointing and sad day for policing,” said York Police Chief Jim Mac Sween. “It highlights how these criminals infiltrate these institutions across our society.”

When asked by a CBC reporter about reports suggesting other police departments might be involved, York Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan-who leads the investigation-did not confirm specifics but assured that all leads would be pursued vigorously.

York Police took charge of the probe into the Toronto officers after evidence surfaced mid-last year; to prevent conflicts of interest, Toronto Police only provided necessary support without having investigative authority.

No responses were received Thursday from inquiries sent to both York and Peel Police.

“Organized crime is insidious and can infiltrate many institutions-including policing,” Hogan stated during the press briefing. “We recognize it could involve multiple agencies and we are dedicated to exploring every aspect regarding relationships among those arrested and any links they may have within organized crime.”

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw attended the conference as well. He described learning about the involvement of seven officers as a “painful and unsettling moment.”

“It needs to be addressed openly and honestly,” he remarked. In light of Project South’s distressing claims, Chief Demkiw has requested an independent audit from Ontario’s Inspector General of Policing for his department.

The charges stemming from Project South are extensive and shocking-resembling something out of a crime drama narrative.

The accusations include conspiracy to commit murder, shootings, extortion, robbery, drug trafficking offenses involving firearms, bribery attempts, obstruction of justice efforts involving thefts below $5K; unauthorized access to private information has also been alleged. It’s claimed that certain officers accessed confidential data which was then passed on to criminal organizations facilitating violence across Southern Ontario. Some crimes are reportedly tied back to the tow-truck industry-a sector already scrutinized due its connection with violent incidents in recent years around the GTA.

An especially disturbing revelation involved a Toronto officer allegedly providing details about a corrections officer’s residence who was targeted three times in an unsuccessful murder attempt orchestrated by criminals associated with this network. A chilling late-night shooting attempt was intercepted by law enforcement; perpetrators were captured on security footage while they attempted entry into the victim’s home.

The following officers now face charges:

56-year-old Constable Timothy Barnhardt faces 17 charges including accepting bribes as a peace officer; breach of trust; unauthorized computer use; conspiracy related obstructing justice alongside drug trafficking charges; 42-year-old Sergeant Robert Black faces four counts pertaining conspiracy against justice along with fraud over $5K; possession aimed at drug trafficking involving cocaine plus Adderall; 49-year-old Sergeant Carl Grellette faces four separate charges including conspiracy against justice; breach concerning public officer trust; minor mischief below $5K alongside harassment through persistent following; 38-year-old Constable Saurabjit Bedi contends with six counts including conspiracy involving bribe acceptance as an officer plus attempting illicit substance traffic alongside two counts concerning obstructing justice conspiracies; 24-year-old Constable Elias Mouawad faces two counts regarding public trust breaches plus unauthorized computer access charges; 57-year-old Constable Derek Mc Cormick has six total offenses lodged against him related breach regarding public trust; obstructing judicial processes together comprising four theft counts below $5K; 29-year-old Constable John Madeley Jr., son Of retired Constable John Madeley Sr., confronts two allegations connected breaches linked towards public service ranks plus unauthorized computer usage.;  55-year-old retired constable John Madeley Sr., facing eleven total accusations includes two related breaches regarding public service duties plus five linked towards unauthorized computing actions-all while previously indicted earlier due links toward gambling circles based online platforms-the father-son pair stand accused leaking vital intel aiding lawbreakers.

The startling news-that police might’ve accepted bribes enabling criminals disrupt communities-has shaken Ontarians deeply since revelations emerged prompting people online express concerns surrounding diminished faith policing integrity.
