Officials from both Canada and the U. S. gathered in Toronto on Thursday for a summit focused on the relationship between the two nations.

On Wednesday, U. S. President Donald Trump seemed to dampen hopes that his administration would pursue renewing the North American free trade agreement, which is up for review next month.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned that the postponed opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Windsor, Ont., and Detroit reflects a cooperative effort between Canada and the U. S., noting that there was no “great drama” surrounding this delay.

Carney explained that Canada agreed to push back the opening of the Gordie Howe bridge at the request of the United States, adding that both countries would “take the necessary time” to address concerns raised by Trump’s team.

“There’s not great drama here,” Carney told reporters at a food terminal in Toronto following the announcement of Canada’s national food strategy. “We’re going to work through some issues that have come up for a bridge that’s going to be in place and serve Canadians, Americans and others for decades.”

He also remarked that a few weeks’ delay is “time well spent.”

When asked about these issues, he described them as “a series of technical aspects” that both nations will address together.

Canada and the United States have decided to postpone launching operations at the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

As per a statement from Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, this choice allows more time to tackle unresolved matters.

Chuck Andary, interim CEO and chief legal officer of the authority, said this decision shows their joint commitment to ensure everything is ready before operations begin.

“The Gordie Howe International Bridge will be a vital economic link for Canada and America,” Andary said in a statement. “As we work towards an opening date, we are taking a collaborative approach reflecting our shared ambition for this trade corridor.”
