The Lennox and Addington County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is looking into a bus rollover incident on Highway 401 near Odessa that occurred Sunday night, resulting in eight passengers being taken to two local hospitals.
According to a release from the OPP, at around 7:15 p. m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, various agencies including OPP, paramedics, and local fire services responded to reports of a commercial passenger bus that had gone off-road and flipped over in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Old Wilton Road.
“The bus was carrying 47 passengers along with the driver when the incident happened. Eight people sustained non-life-threatening injuries such as cuts, broken bones and dislocations. The injured passengers were taken to two local hospitals for medical care,” detailed the OPP.
Kingstonist reached out to OPP for more details regarding where the bus was coming from and going to as well as information about those onboard.
“I don’t have details on where the bus was coming from but it was a group of students heading back to a local university when it left the road,” Constable Martyn Curran, L&A OPP Community Engagement Officer stated in an email.
Kingstonist also contacted Queen’s University to confirm if their students were involved in this incident.
The release mentioned that Highway 401 eastbound was closed for roughly four hours to facilitate emergency response efforts and transport affected passengers away from the highway. The investigation into what caused the rollover is still ongoing.
The OPP is asking anyone who might have seen what happened or who may have dashcam footage from around that time to get in touch with L&A County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and refer to Incident #E260242375. Anonymous tips can be submitted via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www. ontariocrimestoppers. ca.
UPDATE (Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, at 12:03 p. m.)
Queen’s University confirmed that some students were indeed aboard the coach bus involved in yesterday’s collision on Highway 401 (see above).
In response to inquiries from Kingstonist, Queen’s indicated that their students were traveling on the bus which hit a ditch in eastbound lanes of the highway before rolling over onto its side and injuring multiple individuals during Sunday evening’s incident. However, they did not specify how many students were present nor if any sustained injuries.
“The university extends its support to students involved in this accident and recognizes it must have been a frightening incident,” Queen’s stated via email.
“The university offers various support services for students who may be affected by situations like a bus accident. This includes Student Wellness Services – access to medical care and counseling – as well as Care Support Services which assist students dealing with circumstances impacting their academics or campus life. Any student needing help is encouraged to email [email protected].”
