Ontario Power Generation and the provincial government have shared a list of key supply chain vendors that will offer specialized expertise and services for the $26.8 billion refurbishment project at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.

The initiative is set to begin in early 2027, with 90 percent of the total spending occurring within Canada.

Announced on Wednesday by Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce, this project is anticipated to generate over 30,000 jobs during construction and maintain 6,700 jobs throughout its operation while boosting Canada’s GDP by $41.6 billion.

Chris Keefer, President of Canadians for Nuclear Energy, described the announcement as “one of the most important industrial decisions in modern Canada,” emphasizing that Pickering has “earned the right” for refurbishment which will extend the nuclear plant’s life by another 38 years.

“This is nation building at its best.”

The announced supply chain vendors include:

Black & Mc Donald

This Toronto-based company provides integrated multi-trade services and will supply nuclear-qualified staff to handle engineering, procurement, and construction tasks. Key projects involve piping inspections and repairs along with service water and emergency water projects.

Black & Mc Donald plans to create around 400 jobs and has opened a new workspace in Pickering to support these efforts, employing over 85 staff members at this new facility.

BWXT Canada

Located in Cambridge, BWXT Canada stands out as a leading manufacturer of nuclear components and systems. They are set to assist with the project by creating at least 250 skilled trades positions such as welders, fitters, machinists, plus more engineering and support roles.

For the Pickering Nuclear Refurbishment Project, BWXT has secured contracts totaling over $1 billion to produce 48 steam generators at their Cambridge facility.

Can Atom (Atkins Réalis & Aecon)

Can Atom – a collaboration between Atkins Réalis and Aecon – has been selected to provide engineering, procurement, and construction management for parts related to retube, feeder replacement, and boiler work. They’ll be supported by BWXT Canada located in Peterborough and Cambridge alongside Nu-Tech from Arnprior, Cameco from Port Hope and NWI Precision based in Toronto. This joint venture’s work is expected to create more than 2,400 skilled jobs across various fields including engineering, construction, and project management. Can Atom has also rented office space in Pickering to further support local businesses.

E. S. Fox

Based in Niagara Falls area , E. S. Fox will deliver nuclear-qualified personnel for construction services as well as fabrication and maintenance tasks using their extensive experience built over decades in the nuclear sector. E. S. Fox aims to aid in replacing vital air systems like breathing air systems while generating approximately 400 job opportunities linked with these efforts. Similar to Can Atom and Black & Mc Donald , they too have acquired additional office space in Pickering.

Nu-Tech Precision Metals Inc.

Situated in Arnprior eastern Ontario , Nu-Tech Precision Metals plays an essential role within the supply chain assisting with retube operations along with feeder replacement programs at Pickering. As one of a select few manufacturers globally producing pressure tubes-an essential component used within nuclear reactors-their products were crucial during Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment work.

Northern Transformer

With headquarters found within Vaughan City’s Maple region , Northern Transformers designs custom-engineered power transformers tailored specifically towards utility industries. The company has landed contracts supplying two types of medium-voltage transformers coupled together electrical equipment adding around 40 skilled roles stationed at their Maple site.

Shoreline Welding and Machine Inc.

Operating out of Goderich near Lake Huron shores , Shoreline Welding delivers machining solutions alongside repair works focused primarily on both customized fabrication processes plus large-scale production demands. They plan on supplying power carts intended for use during training sessions within mock-up facilities managed under Can Atom’s supervision concerning retube operations.

An important commitment made by OPG includes allocating more than $100 million towards Indigenous companies throughout this refurbishment endeavor. OPG currently seeks partnerships involving several Indigenous businesses such as: 7Gen , AC7G , Makhos-Bird Joint Venture among others located near Scugog Island First Nation communities

Pending final licensing approvals sought via Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission OPG aims commencing refurbishments targeting units five through eight roughly twelve months away finishing anticipated mid-way through thirty -thirties decade. Upon completion enhanced capacity could reach upwards two thousand two hundred megawatts enough electricity serving about two point two million homes.
