One of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in Whitby will soon see improved fire services as the town has started building a new fire station in West Whitby.

The new facility – Fire Station #6 – is being constructed on a 3.44-acre site at the intersection of Des Newman Boulevard and Rossland Road, with plans for it to open in 2027.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks an important step forward in ensuring that our growing West Whitby community has the essential services it needs to thrive,” Mayor Elizabeth Roy stated during Monday’s ceremony. “Fire Station 6 will support faster emergency response times and is a key action item in Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan. This investment reflects our commitment to building strong, well-served neighborhoods – and making sure that as Whitby grows, safety grows with us.”

Whitby Fire and Emergency Services Chief Michael Hickey mentioned that the groundbreaking highlights the town’s dedication to its expanding west side community.

“This new station will improve emergency response times, enable more coverage of our town, and enhance public and firefighter safety across the area,” he explained. “These are exciting times for Whitby Fire and Emergency Services, and we remain committed to delivering exceptional service to our community.”

The council approved a $17 million capital project for constructing the station earlier this year. The new fire hall will create 20 firefighter positions and generate numerous temporary jobs related to construction.
