The opening of Spruce Health Hub was celebrated by staff and partners on Thursday. Situated at 714 Front Rd., this health hub aims to provide a unified point of access for family doctors and nurse practitioners who need to refer patients requiring mental health services, chronic disease management, physiotherapy or other community supports according to a statement from Frontenac Lennox & Addington Ontario Health Team (FLA-OHT).

Morrison believes that consolidating these resources will allow local family doctors to serve more individuals effectively.

Morrison is not only a primary care provider but also serves as chief of staff at Lennox and Addington County General Hospital while being an associate professor in Queen’s Department of Family Medicine. She explained that FLA-OHT’s “North Star mission” is focused on ensuring “every person in our community can be attached to a person-centred health home which is a primary care team.”

“It’s your front door to the health system,” she told the Whig on Friday morning. “It’s where , in your neighbourhood , close to home , everybody has a place to go find services they need to keep them healthy.”

With ten staff members at Spruce Health Care Hub , they’ll assist family doctors by offering quick referral options to various clinical professionals available at Spruce.

“This is where allied health professionals like psychologists , social workers , nurse practitioners , chronic disease nurses , dieticians , physiotherapists , and community navigators can work together to support our primary care teams,” Morrison stated.

At present , this hub will aid over 14,000 patients associated with Greenwood Medical , Frontenac Doctors , Princess Street Medical Clinic , CDK Family Medicine , and Medical Tree-primary care clinics located within the city.

“If you’re looking for an appointment because you’ve hurt your back , instead of going through family doctor first , you could be directly sent to see a physiotherapist as part of this allied health approach.”

Those experiencing mental health challenges might be referred directly to either psychologist or social worker without needing a prior appointment with their family doctor for referral purposes.

“The idea is having everyone work at their best capacity allows us to connect more people effectively,” Morrison said.

The hub project kicked off with applications made under Ontario government’s $2.1-billion Primary Care Action Plan during spring last year. Final approvals were granted late last year with funding amounting to $1.49 million coming from province.

Morrison mentioned that provincial funding will enable primary care providers to roster another 3,500 patients waiting for family doctors listed under Healthcare Connect program here in Kingston. “We’re nearing that target already,” she noted. Morrison advised anyone still searching for a physician should ensure they register with Healthcare Connect. Details about registration can be found on FLA-OHT website at www. flaoht. ca/pages/hcc. Morrison envisions Spruce Health Hub becoming a model for establishing similar clinics throughout Frontenac and Lennox & Addington region-including rural areas where providing healthcare can prove more difficult. 7 This has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Morrison added “Establishing these hub models lays groundwork making replication easier down road,” she stated.“Setting them up won’t take long now since we have solid template available.” On Thursday afternoon, everyone involved at Spruce along with supporting partners gathered together celebrating grand opening filled excitement around this initiative. “We’re thrilled opening this facility for our community,” said Morrison expressing gratitude towards all those backing project-healthcare partners, community members,Ontario Health along ministry supporting such endeavors.” mbalogh
