Renovations at Sunset Beach began last week as the City of St. Catharines kicks off an extensive upgrade project for the well-loved waterfront park.

The work is set to last until the beach season next summer.

This $6.9-million initiative follows the 2019 Community Vision Study, which was shaped by input from local residents. The project also benefits from a $4.4-million grant from Ontario’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). These enhancements aim to boost accessibility, protect and improve natural features, and ensure Sunset Beach stays an inviting spot for both visitors and locals.

Key improvements include:

Accessibility and active transportation features Parking lot and access road upgrades Trail enhancements and more shade structures Replacement of the playground Low-impact stormwater management systems Shoreline protection measures Reconstruction of the boat ramp

The renovations will tackle issues like changing water levels, extreme weather conditions, and rising recreational demands while preserving the park’s distinct character and natural resources.

“Sunset Beach is a beloved community destination, and this project will ensure it continues to serve residents and visitors for years to come,” said a city spokesperson.

This project marks a significant investment in St. Catharines’ waterfront, blending modern updates with careful conservation of the park’s natural and cultural elements.
