Ernest Edgar Barrie, who was born on April 8, 1944, passed away on April 18, 2026, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his son Dan by his side.

Growing up in Slate River with his siblings under the care of William and Winnifred, Ernie went to Riverdale Public School and Selkirk High School.

Starting off as a small motor mechanic, Ernie later retired from the City of Thunder Bay after dedicating 25 years as a master plumber in the water meter department. Over nearly 50 years of work, he became a well-liked presence among coworkers and was admired for his great sense of humor.

Ernie enjoyed life’s simple joys. He loved fishing with his friend Billy Glidden, cheering for his favorite NASCAR drivers, and listening to Gene Watson’s music. He cherished dancing with his wife, spending winters in Harlingen, Texas, going to car shows with his classic cars and most importantly, creating lasting memories with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Verna; sons Bill and Dan (Pam); grandchildren Brittany (Mc Keegan) and Robert (Madison); great granddaughter Celeste and his furry friend Wally. He also leaves behind a large extended family.

He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Winnifred along with sisters Edna Irwin, Joan Petruk, Edythe Magus, Gloria Carlson, Brenda Pelkie; brothers Frank Walsh, Bill Walsh, Jack Walsh and Brian Barrie; as well as in-laws Kathleen and Albert Otway Sr.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the management and staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Ward (nurse Robert) along with all the nurses of 3A for their exceptional care.

A celebration of life will take place at Best Western Plus Nor’Wester Hotel & Conference Centre on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre located at 575 Central Avenue in Thunder Bay.
