1943-2026
Robert (Bob) Popiel passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet Popiel; his daughter Keri; and his son Brian and his wife Deborah. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Bullock (Ken), and his brother-in-law, William Isbell (Helene). Bob was a dedicated grandfather to four grandsons who brought him much joy and laughter: Zachary, Caden, Jacob, and Nicholas. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary, and his sister, June Isbell.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bob was born in Winnipeg. When he turned thirteen, the family moved to Fort William. After graduating from FWCI, Bob joined the family construction business called Gateway Building & Supply and worked at Nor-Ont Supply from 1976 until he passed away. Throughout his career, Bob oversaw the construction of thousands of homes in the city.
On November 6, 1965, Bob married Janet. They spent six wonderful decades enjoying nature at their camp at Pine Bay while traveling across North America to attend countless hockey games and explore everything nature had to offer. A passionate sports fan himself, Bob supported local youth hockey teams and followed high school sports closely; later on he became a big NASCAR fan as well as a Toronto Blue Jays supporter.
Bob will be fondly remembered for his quiet demeanor and calm approach to life as well as for being a shrewd businessman. A true gentleman at heart-he only raised his voice when politely objecting to a bad call during a hockey game or expressing concern over a risky pass at a NASCAR race or questioning a pitching change during Jays games. His steadfast support for family and friends will always be cherished by those who knew him well. His spirit will carry on through all those he influenced-especially among his grandsons who reflect many of Bob’s wonderful qualities. He will be deeply missed.
We want to express our heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses who took care of Bob-especially those in the ICU who were so kind-hearted with him-as well as the Bayshore staff like Brian who helped him these last few years; they always enjoyed good conversations every morning which he really appreciated.
As per his wishes, a private celebration of life will take place later this summer. In lieu of flowers, Bob would have appreciated contributions made in his memory to the Northern Cancer Fund (https://www. healthsciencesfoundation. ca/cancer-donate) or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (https://www. heartandstroke. ca).
