Several stores on the lower level are still closed as the Shops at Pickering’s City Centre manage a watermain break under the main atrium, which caused serious structural damage to the ground floor and forced the mall to shut down during a busy holiday weekend.
The mall, which competes with Oshawa Centre for being the busiest in Durham Region, was evacuated Saturday morning after the watermain broke. Emergency services arrived quickly before repair crews got there to address the situation.
According to Pickering Councillor Maurice Brenner, fixing the watermain required digging up part of the floor.
The main shopping area of the mall stayed closed throughout the holiday weekend; however, retailers with outside entrances or standalone buildings, such as Cineplex theatres, Jack Astor’s, Dave’s Hot Chicken, State & Main, Moxies, Farm Boy, East Side Mario’s and others were able to open for business on Sunday.
The upper level of the mall reopened at 10 a. m. Tuesday while most lower-level shops managed to start welcoming customers a few hours later.
A section of the lower level remains off-limits “until further notice,” and Shops at Pickering City Centre expressed gratitude to shoppers and retailers for their “continued patience and cooperation.”
