A 14-year-old boy from Pickering, Ont., is facing first-degree murder charges after an elderly woman was fatally stabbed on Thursday afternoon.

The teenager appeared in court on Friday morning, dressed in a dark grey sweatshirt and light grey sweatpants.

As he exited the video booth, his right hand seemed to be hurt, wrapped in white medical tape.

The accused has a long-standing no-contact order with several individuals.

His identity is shielded by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He remains in custody and is expected back in court on June 20.

On Thursday at approximately 5:40 p. m., Durham Regional Police sent out an emergency alert, advising residents near 2125 Lynn Heights Dr. in Pickering to shelter in place.

The alert followed a stabbing incident that occurred around 3 p. m., when a male suspect attacked the elderly woman, who police stated was not acquainted with him.

Police reported that surveillance footage showed the woman outside when she was approached by the suspect.

After a short interaction, the suspect attacked her multiple times before running away on foot, according to police reports.

The victim was taken to a trauma center in Toronto but sadly did not survive her injuries.

The victim’s name was mentioned in court on Friday but is being withheld from publication at her family’s request.

Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira stated that officers were unaware of any motive for this “sadistic and cowardly” attack.

Residents were advised to stay indoors while authorities searched for the suspect over several hours.

This led to local facilities like community centers and libraries closing down as part of the shelter-in-place order issued by the City of Pickering.

Around 8:45 p. m., roughly three hours after issuing the emergency alert and nearly six hours post-attack, police confirmed they had arrested a young teen.

“We’re announcing that we’ve arrested a 13-year-old male from Pickering. He’s been taken into custody by our tactical support unit without incident,” Chief Moreira told reporters.

The following day, police clarified that the accused is actually 14 years old.

The chief indicated that investigators still believe this attack was random and have yet to find any connection between them.

Durham police used helicopters, drones along with K9 units and tactical teams during their search of the area.

While there will be much discussion ahead regarding this case,” I ask everyone for patience as law enforcement continues their investigation.” “Let us all come together as one community during this time of loss.” With files from ’s Isaac Callan
