This year’s Snow Day on the Waterfront is a celebration of northwestern Ontario winters.
The annual, free event runs Monday, from 11 a. m. to 4 p. m., at Marina Park.
“Winter is part of our culture, and we really need to embrace and enjoy it,” said Laurie Abthorpe, supervisor of cultural development, community programming, and events with the City of Thunder Bay.
Snow Day, she said, is “a chance to bring community together, whether you’ve lived here for forever or you’re maybe a newcomer into the city and newcomer to this environment.”
Several outdoor and indoor activities are planned for Monday. They include:
A display of ice sculptures by artist Kim Asmussen; Ice fishing, at the Marina Park pond, which has been stocked with lake trout (families can fish for free, without the need for a licence or Outdoors Card, from Feb. 14 to 16 in Ontario); Winter animal activities with Science North, and art activities with the Community Arts and Heritage Education Project (CAHEP) and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery; Making maple taffy treats; Snowshoeing and horse-drawn wagon rides; and Outdoor games.
In addition, Snow Day will feature snow sculpture competitions for professional artists and community groups, said Caitlin Mc Millan, cultural development and public art coordinator with the city.

“There’s juried prizes for the professional group,” she said. “And then there’s also people’s choice voting that happens throughout snow day on Monday, and then throughout the next couple of weeks.”
“As long as weather holds up and the sculptures can hold their own, we’ll continue doing the people’s choice voting until February 22.”
The professional artists are competing for a cash prize while community groups can win $100 in Waterfront District BIA Bucks.
Snow Day on the Waterfront isn’t the only free event running at Marina Park this weekend.
The city’s weekly Winter Fun Days will also continue on Sunday, running from 2-4 p. m.
This weekend’s activities include snow art and Puppet Palooza with CAHEP.
