A video shot in downtown Kingston has triggered a significant online backlash after it seemed to show a business owner allegedly splashing water near a person experiencing homelessness.

The footage, which has been viewed over 63,000 times, led to claims of intimidation and prompted responses from both Kingston police and the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area.

The business owner, Sherry Dadman of i Mode, told that she was simply cleaning up spilled liquids from the sidewalk and was not directing her actions at the man shown under a tarp. She opted not to appear on camera but mentioned that the individual is familiar to those in the area.

“I never ever put the water on him,” she said. “We’ve known him for years. He sits here. This is like my son.”

Dadman also clarified that another person seen sweeping in the video isn’t connected to her business.

Kingston police stated they spoke with the individual featured in the video, who confirmed that the act “was not intentional” and requested no further action. Police have closed the matter.

Advocates for individuals experiencing homelessness argue that this incident highlights wider systemic issues and everyday challenges faced by vulnerable residents.

“They already know they’re devalued in the eyes of the public,” Michelle Schwartz of Feed the People said. “This is not odd in my experience to see homeless people treated this way.”

In response, Downtown Kingston BIA released a statement highlighting that this incident has sparked crucial discussions about homelessness, safety, and pressures on both vulnerable individuals and local businesses. The BIA stressed that there’s an urgent need for more supportive housing along with mental health and addiction services while encouraging regional collaboration.

The organization pointed out its Welcoming Streets initiative launched two years ago aimed at helping de-escalate street-level conflicts and connecting individuals with support services.
