We are heartbroken to share the passing of Larry Hanevy on August 26, 2025, after a long illness.
Larry was born in Athlone, Ireland, on May 17, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents Laurence and Jane Hanevy (née Murphy) and his brother-in-law Joe.
He is survived by his devoted wife Patricia (née Dooley); his children Claudia, Jennifer (Brad), and Paul (Tara); his grandchildren Michael, Eireann (Dakota), Maya, and Quinn; his siblings Stephen (Bernadette), Tom (Kathleen), Marie, and Kieran (Priscilla); his brother-in-law Paul (Valerie) and sister-in-law Elizabeth; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Larry grew up in rural Ireland before moving to Dublin to attend University College Dublin. There he earned his BA and met Patricia. After teaching for several years, they moved to Canada where Larry earned a master’s degree in philosophy at Mc Master University in Hamilton. They traveled across Canada with stops in Thunder Bay, London, and Winnipeg before finally settling in Calgary in 1974. He spent the rest of his career teaching English at St. Francis High School where he formed many lasting friendships.
People will remember Larry for his great sense of humor, skill with words, and natural Irish charm. A true teacher at heart, he had a special affection for his students. His engaging personality made him a favorite among many. Larry enjoyed curling, golf, bridge games, and delightful chats with friends; however, nothing made him happier than spending time with Patricia and their children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Larry’s primary care physician Dr. Karyn Richardson for her exceptional care over the years.
